FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
411 Directory Assistance
 |
- What is 411?
411 or Directory Assistance is a service provided to customers which retrieves telephone numbers from the Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) database. A customers' telephone number can only be retrieved from the LEC database if allowed by the customer. Operators cannot give out numbers that are unlisted or non-published. Customers pay the LEC for unlisted and non-published numbers.
- Why am I being charged for 411?
Originally in the CNMI, 411 was not charged due in large part to the integrity of the phone company database and the telephone book. Today, the phone book and the database have been updated and includes all of the current phone numbers for CNMI customers. The service has grown from a few calls per day to 4,500 calls per day due to the fact that calls are free. In order to service the public effectively, it is essential for PTI to begin charging for 411 calls, as we have added significant cost by taking over 130,000 calls per month.
- How much is a 411 call?
Customers receive three (3) free Directory Assistance calls within each monthly billing period. On the fourth call, customers will be charged at a rate of 25¢ per call.
- If I don't use my three free calls, can I carry them over to the next month?
No. Three free Directory Assistance calls are provided during a single billing period only.
- Will I be charged if I don't get my number when I call 411?
Yes. Operators are still required to spend time researching numbers whether customers receive a directory listing or not.
- What happens if an operator gives me a wrong number?
Customers that are within the 3 free-call period will not be affected. If customers are beyond their 3 free-call period, then they will receive a 25¢ credit for wrong numbers.
- If I cannot read the phonebook because of physical disability, will I be charged?
No. Customers will be asked to provide PTI with information regarding the disability and those customers will not be charged.
- Can I use 411 to get a number in the United States?
Not at this point in time, but improvements are being made to our system which will accommodate this service in the future.
- What is Directory Assistance Call Completion?
Directory Assistance Call Completion (DACC) is a service provided by PTI operators. After customers receive their number from 411, the operator can complete the local call for an additional 35¢ without the customer having to redial the number.
- Can I use DACC during my 3 free-call period?
DACC can be used at anytime since it works independently of Directory Assistance, for a fee of 35¢ per call.
- Can I use 411 from a payphone?
Yes, for a fee of 25¢ per call.
