Dialup Internet

  • What is the Internet?
The Internet is the "network of all networks", a worldwide collection of computer systems connected to and communicating with each other using a protocol or communications rules called TCP/IP or simply the Internet Protocol Suite. For now, the Internet is considered as "cyberspace" and the "Information superhighway".

  • What can I get from the Internet?
There are so many things that you can get from the Internet. The Net is not only about computers. It offers lots of useful information for everybody. For those in business or commerce, you can learn about the latest products and services that you can sell, keep you up to date about your competitors and even market your product lines on the Net. If you are a hobbyist, there are tens of thousands of people who may share the same interests and may have lots of useful information stored in files which you can download on your PC or computer. If you are into stocks and securities, you can follow the rise and fall of share prices in the London, New York or Tokyo stock exchanges. If you are into scientific or academic research, you can communicate with experts and consultants in various fields from all over the world or access information from the US Library of Congress or the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). If you are a student preparing a book report or term paper, you can talk to or discuss your topic with other people online, or even download their work for comparison.

  • Is it difficult to use the Internet?
It is true that in the 80s, the Internet was mostly a home for techies like programmers, researchers and some bright students. But now, with softwares like Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer, you can be up and running in no time at all. The Internet is now easier to use than ever and anybody who has basic knowledge in using a computer will find it easy to navigate the Net.

  • What kind of computer equipment and modem do I need?
Basically, you would need an ordinary computer (either a PC or Macintosh), graphic monitor, a mouse, and a modem (external or internal) connected to a telephone line to be able to access the Internet. To get connected (for dialup account), all you have to do is make your terminal software dial the Internet access number and log on. Dialup modems have different transmission speeds -- from 1200 to 56 Kilobits per second (Kbps). The faster your modem, the more efficient you can use your Internet access time. For telephone lines that are not conditioned for data transmission, you might consider choosing a modem with a good error correction and detection mechanism. DSL modems are used for DSL connections and do not need a dialup software since having this service has a 24/7 internet connection.

  • Why do I get frequently disconnected?
    These are the possible reasons:

    • Once you're online and the phone you are using is accidentally or intentionally lifted. Connection is lost if your modem cannot retrain the connection.
    • If your call-waiting is enabled on your system, constant beeping will interrupt the transmission flow and will disconnect you due to the large data losses between the two modems.
    • Check your dialer configuration.

  • Why is it that when I get disconnected, there are times when I cannot reconnect at once?
If your connection was terminated improperly, it leaves a shadow or a mirror of your presence in the server. What happened was, the modem was not able to send a reset string so your login information is still active. A program checks this condition every 5 minutes and sees if connections are still active. If not, then this program will sweep this login information and you can login again.

  • Why is it that when I connect, there's a message that there's no dialtone?
There are several reasons why a modem may not respond. Please check if the modem is powered up.
Check your modem cable connection. Also, did you configure the port correctly? Most PCs have only two ports.

  • Why is it that when I connect, I can hear the modem touch tone dialing but I get continuous dial tone and cannot connect?
